Imagine – a tall shimmering pillar of light illuminating Iceland’s mysterious night skies. On a cloudless night, it looks like a clear tower, while in rain or snowfall the beam is iridescent with rainbow refractions. This is the Imagine Peace Tower, an outdoor work of art conceived by Yoko Ono in memory of John Lennon. It is situated on Viðey Island in Reykjavík, Iceland, and was first unveiled in 2007 on the occasion of what would have been John Lennon’s 67th birthday, as a symbol of his and Yoko Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace. At the base of the tower, which looks like a well, the words “Imagine Peace” are inscribed in 24 languages. The tower appears every year and is visible from October 9th (John’s birthday) until December 8th (the anniversary of his death).
The tower is also illuminated during Winter Solstice (December 21st – 28th), on New Year’s Eve and the first week of spring (March 21st – 28th).
