
Jonathan Adler is on a mission to create “merch” that heirs will fight over in court. COUTURELAB caught up with the craft and dog obsessed potter at his new London store and asked for his ultimate holiday gift guide.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR WORK?
Style, craft and joy. I started out as a potter making every piece myself. I’m obsessed by craft. I believe craft is what elevates objects above the realm of just stuff. My dream is that I make stuff that people’s heirs will fight over. The only way to get heirs in lawsuits with each other is to focus on timeless permanence. That’s only attainable through impeccable craftsmanship and focus on quality.
WHERE DO YOU SEE JONATHAN ADLER IN THE DESIGN SPECTRUM?
Every room needs a dash of hippie and a dollop of socialite. That’s who I am. I’m unapologetically fancy as well as authentically bohemian because I’m a potter. So I have a schizophrenic identity. My work is about fusing those two parts of me. The range that you guys have selected is a reflection of the cheeky iconography and homages to a jet set lifestyle
but rendered in a crafty fabrication like the Ipanema pillow in needlepoint.
WHICH PRODUCTS WOULD BE ON YOUR CHRISTMAS GIFT LIST?
The Mr and Mrs Muse salt and peppershakers are great little funsters. Everybody needs a couture salt and pepper shaker to populate their tablescape. These are my favorite products in the range. The Ipanema pillow is fab for anyone who’s
